Mount Whitney to Brazil

Today’s trip took me to the summit of Mount Whitney....No, not that Mount Whitney, the one in San Marcos.  I used up the morning on an outing with my friend Ryan so it had to be a short trip.  It felt good to put the backpack on and take a short hike with Sulu.  The total hike was 2 miles and if I had taken the proper route to the IAF, it would have practically been a drive up.  Conditions were very cloudy and even though the peak is only at 1,736 feet, it was just about in the clouds.

2018-05-12 Denk Mtn.

I didn’t have a lot of time for a big hike today given that I wanted to attend the ARES volunteer meeting and run some errands.  I decided to fit in a quick hike with the radio to Denk Mountain (W6/SC-368 - Denk Mountain), just up the road near Encinitas.  It’s an easy 3.8 mile hike with .6 of that being a screw up (left turn too early).  The trail is heavily used by mountain bikers but for hiking, it’s a good family trail.  The summit is only 1,050 feet but it has a really nice view of the ocean.  Actually, it has a great 360 view.

2018-04-28 - A Triple Header

Today I joined Adam Kimmerly (K6ARK formerly known as KJ6HOT), Dennis Peck (KA6DUH), and Jeanette on an epic three peak SOTA adventure in the San Gabriel mountains along the Angel’s crest highway north of LA.  It’s a pretty area to hike in and today we’ll definitely get some miles in.  Adam charted out several options for today’s objectives, Islip, a 5 mi out and back, Mt. Williamson, about a 5.9 mile out and back, and Kratka, a 2.2 mile out and back with a bonus of Table Mountain, a drive-up with .2 out and pack if we play nice.
